History of Secondary School-Gymnasium No. 4 named after Zhambyl Zhabayev

1907
Opened as a Kazakh-Tatar madrasa.

1909
Galymzhan Kurmashev, specially invited from Kazan, introduced the teaching of core subjects.

1918
The building was used as a military hospital of Kolchak’s Army, and classes were suspended.

1919
With the support of the Soviet Government, the school reopened.

1930
The school became a seven-year school.
Physics and chemistry classrooms, as well as a gymnasium, were equipped.

1936
The first 7 graduates completed their studies.

1940
The school was named after the great Kazakh poet Zhambyl Zhabayev.

1945
Reorganized into a secondary school. A girls’ dormitory for 120 students was opened.

1954
600 boys and girls began to study together.

1958
A new school building for 765 students was put into operation.

1991
Under the initiative of Jumabike Arpenova, “Excellence in Public Education of the Kazakh SSR,” a new three-story building was constructed, accommodating 1,031 students.

1994
Gymnasium classes with advanced English instruction were opened.

1997
The school received the status of “School-Gymnasium.”

1998
Under the leadership of Professor N.T. Temirgaliyev, Head of the Department of Mathematical Analysis at L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, classes with advanced mathematics instruction were opened. Four PhD holders taught in these classes.
An “Abai Studies” course was introduced.

1999
On April 7, President N.A. Nazarbayev visited the school, met with teachers and students, and expressed gratitude for the positive progress in the educational process.

2000
The City Department of Education recognized the school as “The Best School Providing Quality Education.”

2001
The National Instruments Orchestra was awarded the title of “People’s Art Ensemble.”
The “Abai Museum” and “Independence Gallery” were opened.

2002
Among new-type schools, the school staff won 3rd place.

2003
An additional building for 700 students was constructed.

2004
The “School History” museum was opened.

2007
The 100th anniversary of School-Gymnasium No. 4 named after Zhambyl Zhabayev was celebrated.
High results in UNT (Unified National Testing), with 9 students awarded the “Altyn Belgi” (Gold Medal).

2008
Students excelled in international and city scientific projects.

2009
Students achieved high results in district and city subject Olympiads.

2010
To improve UNT results, partnerships with universities were established. 49 students won prizes in international and national research competitions, making the school one of the leaders in Astana.

2011
The “Zhambyl Laboratory” was opened, integrated with the School History and Abai Studies laboratories, winning 2nd place in the national museum competition. Teachers and students visited the Zhambyl Zhabayev Memorial House in Almaty Region for research work.

2012
The “Zhambyl Studies” program was developed and distributed citywide. Together with the “Astana Daryny” Center, the Zhambyl Readings were held on February 28 in three areas: scientific conference, young poets’ contest, and recitation of Zhambyl’s poems.

2013
The experimental platform of the “Step-by-Step Integrated Analysis” technology was launched. Students won city and national awards.
The school won the nomination “School of the Future” in the “Best International School Brand–2013” competition.

2014
The “Student Voice” project was launched – monthly meetings with students to discuss issues that concern them.
Teacher Meirambek Uazyrkhanov became a prize-winner of the national contest “Best Teacher.”

2015
Handicrafts were introduced; cooperation with Turkish TIKA companies was established to promote Kazakh national crafts internationally.
Teacher S. Karshyga became a prize-winner of the “Best Teacher” contest.

2015–2016
A national young akyns’ aitys dedicated to Zhambyl’s 170th anniversary and the 25th anniversary of Independence was held. Based on high UNT results, 16 teachers received Certificates of Appreciation from the Ministry of Education and Science.

2016
A republican young akyns’ aitys “Speak of Unity Preserved by Accord” was organized.

2017
The 110th anniversary of the school-gymnasium was celebrated at the city level.

2018
The school became a leading institution for the cluster of updated educational content. It entered the top ten schools of Astana. A STEM innovation classroom was opened.

2019
The school won the Mayor of Nur-Sultan’s Grant (10 million KZT).

2020
The projects “Zhambyl and National Upbringing” and “Book Reading Hour” were introduced into the educational process.
According to the “Astana Daryny” rating, the school ranked among the top ten in Olympiads and scientific projects.
Students Serikov Kairat and Tynymbek Zhanarys became winners of national scientific competitions.
Teacher Atantayeva S.A. took 2nd place in the national “Young Specialist” contest.

2021
The school was awarded a 2nd-degree diploma as “Best City Team–2021.”
Student Assembekkyzy Assem became the winner of the national research projects contest.
Student Ermaganbet Aigerim became a prize-winner of the national Abai Readings.

2022
Amangeldiyeva Ayauym won a Gold Medal in the national research projects contest.

2023
The school-gymnasium won 3rd place diploma as “Best Olympiad Team–2023.”
The debate club “Parasat” was recognized as “Best Club,” and the school itself as “Best School” for its contribution to the debate movement in Astana.
Abayeva Aliya won a Silver Medal in the national research projects contest.
Primary school teacher Asemgul Aubakirova Magzumova became a 2nd-degree laureate of the national competition of teaching methods under the “Healthy Eating School” program.

2024
The school-gymnasium once again was recognized as “Best Olympiad Team” at the city stage of the national Olympiad.
Chemistry teacher Akmaral Gabitkyzy Kozhantayeva received the national title “Best Teacher–2024.”
Tulbakan Erkin won the Grand Prix in the city competition “Best Deputy Director for Educational Work.”
Satybaldin Batyrkhan won a Gold Medal in the national research projects contest.
Akhmet Akbilek won a Gold Medal in the national “Zerde” creative children’s contest.
The girls’ volleyball team became national champions, while the boys’ team became 15-time national champions.
A republican young akyns’ aitys “The Son Sharpens Arrows as His Father Taught” was held, where student Batan Olzhas took 2nd place (teacher Tleukul Nartai).
